Dear cellists,

Let us gather to celebrate the cello and share in a tag-team informal performance of Sevcik’s 40 Variations, Opus 3, enjoy a cello choir reading session, a masterclass on the Sevcik with Dr. Beth Cantrell of Mary Baldwin College, share brunch on the Hollins University campus, and generally share and deepen cello goodwill in our general region!

The date is Saturday, April 2, from 10 a.m.-5:00 p.m., on the beautiful Hollins campus. This event comes at minimal cost ($30), to cover the cost of hiring pianist Taylor Baldwin to rehearse and perform the Sevcik and to offer Dr. Cantrell an honorarium. Teachers who bring two or more students come free of charge.

Housing is available on campus or at a discount at the nearby Country Inn & Suites, for either Friday night the 1st, or Saturday the 2nd, or both. For reservations, contact:

Professionals and cello students of all ages are invited, including adult amateurs; everyone is welcome to come and perform one of the Sevcik Variations or just to attend without performing. Here is an editable Google document where you can sign up for the variation you would like to perform:

Please spread the word, and encourage all cellists to gather and strengthen the cello community in our part of the country. I am delighted to host this opportunity for fellowship and music, and welcome questions. My hope is that teachers will come with some of their studio members, that cellists old and young, more experienced and less experienced, professional and non-professional, will all participate in a warm gathering of the cello clans. It would be lovely to have at least forty-one cellists to perform, one each, the theme and 40 variations of one of the great patrons of the bow, Otakar Sevcik.
